There’s a saying you hear a lot in the health and fitness world: “Strive for progress, not perfection.” Like many people, I have always struggled with eating properly and exercising regularly (or at all!) But over the last several years I have begun to make progress. I went from pretty much never exercising, to exercising weekly. I went from rarely eating fruits and vegetables, to incorporating them into my life on a daily basis. I may not get the amount I am supposed to every day, but I’m closer than I was last year, and MUCH closer than I was 5 years ago.
While I’ve developed a lot of healthy habits in the last few years, I still have my weaknesses. A couple nights ago I ate a whole package of Sour Patch Kids in one sitting, and my husband and I went a little nuts on National Pizza Day. So clearly what makes me healthy is not that I have achieved perfection. I think what makes me healthy is that I never give up trying to be better and trying to make progress.
